Much Wenlock Cup – how it works
Purpose
To reduce single use plastic cups and to generate greater awareness of environmental matters in the town, by both businesses and customers. The scheme has been part-funded by a grant from Veolia.
This type of system has proven very successful in Shrewsbury with the Shrewsbury Cup.
Note that businesses participating in the Shrewsbury Cup are charged £20 a month membership fee. The Much Wenlock Cup will not have any membership or management fees for participating businesses.
Coffee shops and hospitality
1. This is a voluntary scheme that is intended to be cost-neutral to the participating businesses and customers.
2. Plastic Free Much Wenlock will provide a starter set of 20 Much Wenlock Cups to those businesses wishing to participate. The focus will be on premises that sell drinks in single use cups.
3. Customers purchasing drinks in single use cups can be offered a Much Wenlock Cup instead. This will be for a deposit price of £2, which is returnable to the customer.
4. The deposit will be returned to the customer when / if they bring the cup (undamaged) back to any participating business.
5. The business accepting returned cups will wash them for subsequent use and “re-sale”.
6. Businesses can request additional Much Wenlock Cups through Plastic Free Much Wenlock when their initial starter set runs out. The price will be £2 per cup, no profit is intended to be generated through this scheme.
7. Plastic Free Much Wenlock will provide a notice / sign explaining how it works, for businesses to display if they wish.
8. Businesses may opt out at any time by returning any remaining Much Wenlock Cups to Plastic Free Much Wenlock along with any deposits received. In the event that the business has paid out more in deposits than cups sold, the balance will be reimbursed.
